Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest airport, handling 8.15 million passengers in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift marks a significant change in the aviation landscape, as Heathrow’s passenger numbers dropped by 1.5% from the previous year. The decline at Heathrow is partially linked to disruptions arising from the Middle East conflict. In contrast, Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in its passenger traffic during the same period.
This development has intensified calls for the UK government to move forward with Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Heathrow currently operates with two runways that are nearly at full capacity. The proposed expansion, estimated to cost £33 billion, aims to increase the airport’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers. According to Heathrow officials, the latest statistics underscore the urgent need for additional capacity to bolster the UK’s international trade, tourism, and connectivity.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and 24/7 operations. The airport currently utilizes three runways, with a fourth expected to be operational by the end of 2026. This strategic advantage has enabled Istanbul to handle more passenger traffic than its London counterpart, marking a pivotal moment in Europe’s aviation sector.
Meanwhile, in the UK, London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July ever. London Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester Airport served 3.4 million, highlighting a strong demand for air travel within the region. These figures reflect a broader trend of recovery in passenger numbers across the UK’s major airports.
