Jingye Demands £1bn for Tech Investments After British Steel’s Nationalisation

Jingye, a Chinese steel manufacturing company, has officially filed for compensation against the UK government following the nationalisation of British Steel’s plant in Scunthorpe. This legal action is being pursued under the bilateral investment treaty between the UK and China, after ongoing discussions for a financial settlement reportedly failed to reach an agreement. Industry insiders suggest that the compensation claim might exceed £1 billion.

The conflict arises from the UK government’s decision to nationalise British Steel due to national security concerns, emphasizing the importance of maintaining domestic steel production capabilities. This intervention was prompted by worries over potential plant closures and significant job losses. Jingye had acquired British Steel in 2020 and had been contemplating shutting down operations due to financial difficulties and a global steel market oversupply. However, the UK government’s takeover averted the closure and transferred control of the assets to the state.

Jingye contends that it deserves compensation for the losses and investments it made since acquiring British Steel. The UK government has defended its decision as necessary to safeguard strategic industrial capacity and employment within the country. Should a settlement not be reached during the treaty’s consultation period, the dispute is anticipated to proceed to international arbitration. Analysts caution that this case could potentially strain economic relations between the UK and China.

Concurrently, the UK is examining its broader steel industry policies, which include import restrictions and the potential restructuring of the domestic steel sector. This review is part of the UK’s preparation for long-term changes in steel production and ownership.
