The UK economy showed modest growth in May, expanding by 0.1% after a slight contraction of the same percentage in April. This development is attributed to a 0.3% increase in the services sector, although gains were tempered by declines in other areas. Specifically, production fell by 0.5%, and construction activity decreased by 0.8% during the same period.

Notably, the scientific research and development sector emerged as a strong performer, recording a significant monthly increase of 5.1%. This boost contributed to the overall economic recovery, underscoring the sector’s vital role amid broader economic challenges.

Over the three months leading up to May, the UK’s economy grew by 0.7%, marking a slight slowdown from the 0.8% growth reported in the previous quarter. Economists have highlighted the economy’s resilience against a backdrop of rising energy prices and uncertainties stemming from the Middle East conflict. However, they also warn that ongoing supply chain disruptions and escalating energy costs remain significant threats to sustained economic growth.

In light of these developments, the International Monetary Fund has revised its growth forecast for the UK economy, projecting a 1% increase for the year. Despite this upgrade, analysts maintain that the economic outlook is fraught with uncertainty, largely due to prevailing geopolitical tensions.
