EU Pushes Google to Share Search and Android Tech with AI Competitors

The European Union has mandated that Google expand accessibility to its Android platform and search services as part of new regulations aimed at enhancing competition within the digital marketplace. These rules are part of a broader effort to limit the dominance of major tech firms and offer consumers more choices in digital products and services.

Under these requirements, Google is compelled to open up 11 key Android features to competing developers of artificial intelligence, offering them the capability to integrate with essential device functions and respond to voice commands similarly to Google’s own Gemini assistant. Users can anticipate these changes being rolled out in an Android update set for July 2027.

Furthermore, Google is obliged to share certain anonymized search data with AI companies and other competing search services. This move is intended to enable these entities to refine and enhance their search-based offerings. However, Google retains the right to evaluate whether these companies adhere to cybersecurity and data protection standards before sharing any data, ensuring compliance with security measures. This data-sharing requirement is slated to begin in January of the upcoming year.

The European Commission emphasized that these measures are designed to safeguard user privacy and device security while simultaneously fostering increased competition in the domains of artificial intelligence and online search. Despite these assurances, Google has voiced concerns, arguing that the imposed changes might undermine privacy and security protections for users. The company has proposed alternative solutions to address the regulatory apprehensions but maintains its stance against the decision.

These directives are encapsulated within the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, a legislative framework aimed at curbing the influence of significant technology companies. By enforcing such measures, the EU seeks to create a more competitive environment that could potentially lead to more innovative and consumer-friendly digital services.
