The surge in South Korean stocks on Monday, driven by semiconductor shares, offers a glimmer of hope amid global economic uncertainties. Investors capitalized on promising gains in the technology sector, which helped counterbalance fears regarding Middle East tensions and rising oil prices.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) saw a significant uptick, climbing 113.49 points, or 1.65%, closing at 7,007.72. This increase marked the third consecutive session of gains, buoyed by optimism in artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related stocks.

Leading the charge, Samsung Electronics saw a notable increase of 4.98%, bringing its share price to 274,000 won. Meanwhile, SK hynix, another key player in the semiconductor industry, experienced a modest rise of 0.59%, with shares trading at 1.87 million won. SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, also benefited, with its stock advancing by 4.45%.

However, the broader market presented a mixed picture. Major players in other sectors, such as Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution, faced declines. Hyundai Motor’s shares fell by 1.64%, while LG Energy Solution experienced a more pronounced drop of 3.3%.

In currency markets, the South Korean won gained strength against the US dollar, ending the day at 1,381 won per dollar, an increase of 4.5 won from the previous session. This currency movement reflects broader market optimism despite lingering geopolitical concerns.
